The first miracle was witnessed when a young man visiting from Cyprus entered the church: a glowing light and an invisible power coming from the icon pushed him down to the ground. The young man later confessed that he was not a believer and that he used to participate in rituals of black magic. He repented and became an Orthodox Christian. He joined the Roman army at a very young age, and found much success in the military, progressing to a high rank. In the year 303 A.D, Diocletian called an assembly with some of his top generals, Saint George being among them and asked them to make pagan sacrifices as an act of allegiance to Diocletian and the Roman Empire. While the other generals pledged themselves to paganism and the Roman Empire, Saint George proclaimed his faith in Jesus Christ. The name derives from the central figure in the well-known parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) and suggests the intimacy of love. Christ, in his Passion, is the divine Bridegroom of the Church, connoting the union of the Lover the Beloved. The parable is also associated with the Second Coming and the need for spiritual vigilance and preparedness, calling Orthodox Christians to keep the divine commandments at all times.

Here is the Holy Icon of Jesus Christ the Bridegroom, depicting Christ's Passion and His deep humility. The "Chi Rho" refers to the Greek letters "X" and "P" which are the first two letters of the name of "Christ" in Greek, stylized together. During his sleep that night, Christ appeared to him and explained the significance and power of the symbol. The next day, Constantine commanded the Chi Rho be inscribed onto the shield of each of his soldiers and carried banners into battle proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ inscribed the Cross into every soldier's shield and made a banner proclaiming the name of God. In the name of Jesus Christ, Constantine was victorious in what later became known as the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. Constantine eventually made Christianity the official faith of the Empire, establishing the Church as a powerful institution and calling the First Ecumenical Council to rid the Faith of the despicable Arian heresy. The mystery was revealed by the Holy Mother of God Herself, who urged Gabriel, a monk of the monastery, to walk on the waters (as if it were land) and bring the Icon back to shore. The monks built a chapel and zealously worshipped the icon every day. Despite this, after its installation in the altar, the icon repeatedly disappeared from the chapel and was always found above the gate of the monastery. The Holy Virgin Mary appeared to monk Gabriel again, to tell him that this was the place she had chosen, so that she could protect the monks, and not be protected by them. Michael has interceded for the faithful multiple times throughout history, especially in wars. For example, he helped in defeating the Persians in Daniel 10:13, slaying the Assyrian barbarians, and protecting the Israelites in the Great Exodus. Later in time, he appeared to help Constantine the Great multiple times in battle. Archangel Michael is also known as one of the protectors of the monastery of Dochiariou in Mount Athos, appearing to Saint Neophytus in his lifetime. One of the most celebrated miracles of Archangel Michael is saving the church of Colossae, where pagans tried to divert the flow of the river and wipe out the church. Archangel Michael appeared carrying a cross and blocking the water from the church. This miracle is commemorated on September 6, but Archangel Michael's feast day is celebrated on November 8, along with the other angels and bodiless powers.

***

This icon is made of solid, natural limewood that has been prepared by hand using traditional methods and organic materials. A few years later, an accident which almost led to his death if not for the intercession of the Theotokos, led him to return home to Evoia due to health concerns. He lived at the monastery of Saint Charalambos, where he was tonsured as a priest and eventually became a confessor.
