Because of the advanced age of Saint Metrophanes, the first Patriarch of Constantinople, Alexander, a bishop at the time, substituted for Patriarch Metrophanes at the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea. Alexander was later chosen by Patriarch Metrophanes as his successor, forced by the times to contend with both Arians and pagans. Once, in a dispute with a pagan philosopher, Alexander said \"In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ I command you to be quiet!\" and the pagan suddenly became mute. When the pagan gestured with signs to acknowledge his error, his speech returned and he glorified Christ with the other pagans present. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFurther, Alexander punished the heretic Arius through his prayers. Emperor Constantine, convinced by Arius's lies that he was ready to be received back into communion, commanded that Arius be received back into the Church. Alexander, aware of Arius's deception, lack of repentance, and malicious intent, prayer to God that He would take Arius from the world rather than be forced to restore someone to communion who he feared was only feigning repentance.
