The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Panteleimon was born in Nicomedia in 275 A.D under the name Pantoleon. Raised by a pagan father and a Christian mother, Pantoleon chose to become a Christian. He grew up to be a proficient physician, and began to practice medicine philanthropically, serving people in need for free. Because of his compassion to others, he was renamed “Panteleimon”, coming from the Greek word “eleimosini” or compassion. In the name of Christ, Panteleimon performed many miracles, including giving sight to a blind man. This miracle however, led to the martyrdom of the blind man who proclaimed his faith in Christ, as well as Panteleimon’s martyrdom, for performing a miracle in the name of God.

Saint Panteleimon the Russian's feast day is celebrated on July 27.

The Story Behind This Icon:

In the year 1462, during the Turkish Ottoman occupation, the Monastery of Taxiarches on Lesvos, Greece was attacked by pirates who threatened the monks with death if they did not reveal the whereabouts of the hidden villagers. The monks refused and the invaders slaughtered them all except for one, Gabriel, who remained hidden. The pirates noticed him from afar and returned to kill him, but the Archangel Michael appeared and with his own sword, forced them to retreat in terror. The monk survived and gathered up the earth that was red from the blood of the martyred monks and shaped it into the icon of the Archangel as it is today, while it was still vivid in his memory.  According to legend, the monk did not have enough of the dirt-blood mix and so the head of the Archangel has turned out disproportionately larger to the rest of his body. Centuries have passed and the Icon of the Archangel Michael is still venerated by thousands of pilgrims every year.

The original icon is now kept in the interior of the church in the Monastery of Taxiarchis, Mantamados, on the island of Lesvos, Greece. Many islanders and pilgrims have had personal experiences of miracles granted for them by the icon. This is evident by the numerous gifts housed inside the church.

"The present publication has been provided in response to the requests of the many pilgrims and visitors who wish to learn about the history of the Hesychasterion, as well as the lives of its patron Saints. 

The history of the Holy Hesychasterion Evangelist John the Theologian is rather short; October of 2020 marked fifty-three years since its first Sisters were settled here. Its founding is attributed primarily to Saint Paisios the Athonite. It was he who, from the start, saw to both its structural and spiritual foundation, endowed it with the sacred relics of Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian, and guided the Sisterhood, for twenty-eight years (1966-1994), with its divine wisdom and love. After having fallen asleep in the Lord, he rests in accordance with his wish, on the premises of the Heschaterion, next to the Church of Saint Arsenios. 

The book begins with an informative section about the region in which the Hesychasterion is located, and is followed by a short summary of its journey up until the present time. The subsequent chapters include excerpts on the subject of monasticism taken from unpublished letters which Saint Paisios had addressed to the Sisterhood. These, in turn, are followed by..."

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Paisios was born in the early 1920s in the small town of Farasa, in Cappadocia, where the town priest was Saint Arsenios. Saint Paisios led a normal life and grew up to join the army during the Greek Civil War. He insisted on never firing a weapon, and therefore served as a radio operator. Once, during a battle, his unit was under heavy fire, but he prayed to the Panagia to intercede, and she quickly did, saving him and his unit. Following the Civil War, Saint Paisios became a monk, arriving on Mount Athos in 1950. He first settled at the monastery of Esphigmenou, before leaving for Philotheou. Later in life, Paisios suffered from lung problems and had to leave for Thessaloniki to be treated. During his time outside of Mt. Athos, he stayed with the Sisterhood of St. John the Theologian in Souroti, just outside of Thessaloniki. Saint Paisisos returned after a couple of years of treatment to live in the cell of Panagouda, which belongs to the Koutloumousiou Monastery. It was there where Saint Paisios became widely known. Many people from around the world came to see and speak with him. Saint Paisios had many God-given abilities and helped many who came to him, simultaneously praying for the entire world. In 1993, Saint Paisios left the Holy Mountain due to health issues. Saint Paisios lived for others, not caring at all for himself, which left him in a weakened health state. He slept in Christ in 1994 in the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian in Souroti, Greece.

Saint Paisios' feast day is celebrated on July 12.

The first Sunday after Easter commemorates the assurance of the Apostle Thomas. After the Resurrection, Christ appeared to His Disciples, yet the Apostle Thomas was not present and later declared to the others: “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails and unless I put my hand into the mark on His side, I will not believe”. Christ appeared miraculously a second time, eight days after the Resurrection and asked the Apostle Thomas to touch the wounds on His body. The eighth day has a significant meaning as the number "eight" in Christian theology signifies completion, fullness and a new beginning. The Apostle Thomas verified the wounds and was convinced that the Resurrection was true and real and he exclaimed “My Lord and My God”, confirming the miracle of the Resurrection as credible. Thomas’ absence during Christ’ first appearance was not by chance but part of God’s providence. 

This beautiful icon depicts the Apostle Thomas wanting to see for himself the wounds of Christ’s hands and side. The Greek wording on the icon reads “The Touching of Thomas”, as the icon does not show the doubt of Thomas, but rather his reassurance.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Olga lived in the early tenth century A.D. in Russia. She married into the royal family through Prince Igor the First, whose father was the first leader of Russia. After her husband was murdered, Olga was the temporary ruler of the state (for almost twenty years) until their son, Svyatoslav was old enough to rule himself. She was well known for her strong and stable administration. During her time in power, Olga went to visit Constantinople, in which she found Christianity and converted. She returned back to Kiev to live the rest of her life in peace. Although she, herself did not convert the Russian people to Christianity, by becoming Christian herself, she influenced her people and her descendants to follow suit.

Saint Olga's feast day is celebrated on July 11.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Matrona was born blind in 1881 in western Russia. During her baptism, the priest saw a cloud appear above her, showing blessings from above. At the age of fourteen, her family visited the city of Kronstadt to see Saint John. Without even seeing her, John yelled “Matrona, come here! She will be my heir, and will become the eighth pillar of Russia.” At the age of seventeen, Matrona became paralyzed from the waist down, unable to walk. She stayed in her room for almost all of her time, with icons surrounding her. Blind and paralyzed, Matrona had the grace of God upon her, seeing many people and prophesying the Russian revolution, as well as many other events. In 1925, she settled in Moscow, living there for around twenty years before beginning to move frequently. She was wanted by the communist government for inspiring faith in people, and secretly lived in the homes of Christians. Many people came to see her, as she was known for performing miracles. She passed away in 1952, having prophesied her death.

Saint Matrona’s feast day is celebrated on May 2.

The Lord God appointed the Archangel Michael as Chief Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, casting down the arrogantly proud Lucifer from Heaven and the other fallen spirits when they rebelled against God. The name Michael comes from the Hebrew meaning “who is like unto God”> Archangel Michael is honored for his actions in defense of Heaven and humanity, both in the Old Testament and New Testament. He is a steadfast defender of the Orthodox faith and of faithful people, often appearing in defense of the helpless. Archangel Michael is particularly beloved in the Russian Orthodox Church for many miracles attributed to him in defense of the Russian Orthodox people. Orthodox Christians invoke Archangel Michael for protection from invasion by enemies and from civil war, and for the defeat of adversaries on the field of battle. He conquers all spiritual enemies. Archangel Michael is portrayed in Orthodox iconography in his role as Chief Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, holding a sword, shield and/or spear and adorned in armor (usually in the style of whatever culture created the icon) as well as wings and a red cape.

The Story Behind this Icon:

Saint Sophia and her daughters openly confessed their Christian faith and were eventually denounced to the Emperor. Brought to Rome for trial, Hadrian marveled at the beauty of Saint Sophia, but realizing she was beyond his flattery, put each of her daughters on trial separately.

Saint Sophia’s efforts as a mother were rewarded as each of her faithful daughters refused to honor the pagan gods and, with her encouragement to place their faith in Christ the Heavenly Bridegroom, accepted the crown of martyrdom after torture and beheading.

Hadrian, intending to make Saint Sophia suffer more, permitted her to take the bodies of her daughters. She placed their remains in coffins and reverently buried them on the top of a hill, sitting by their graves for three days and giving up her soul to God. Even though Saint Sophia did not suffer in the flesh for Christ, she was granted the crown of martyrdom for the suffering she endured in her heart.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Eleftherios lived in the Roman Empire during a time in which paganism was the prominent religion. Saint Eleftherios was brought up Christian by his mother, and from a young age, he was very involved in the church. He became a priest at the age of 18, and a bishop when he was only 20 years old. Saint Eleftherios was a very intelligent bishop, he was a renowned scholar of the church and a great orator. As a result of this, Emperor Hadrian ordered a centurion, Felix, to find and capture him. Felix succeeded in finding Saint Eleftherios and his hidden church, walking in on him giving a sermon. Felix was captivated by the oratory of the brilliant Eleftherios. He felt bad about bringing treachery to the church and offered Eleftherios an escape. Eleftherios declined and forgave the man who brought him to the Emperor to undergo trial. He was put in prison, tortured and killed.

Saint Eleftherios is the protector of the expectant mothers and childbirth. His feast day is celebrated on December 15.

The Story Behind This Icon:

This unique icon, "Deisis” (Supplication), depicts St. Paisios and St. John the Russian on the two far ends along with the Virgin Mary and St. John the Theologian, all praying to Christ in Majesty. When praying to the Virgin Mary or to a Saint, we pray for their intercession, asking them to take our prayer to God Himself; We pray to the Saints, so they can pray for us. The Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on October 28 (moved by the Church of Greece from October 1 to coincide with “Oxi Day” in honor of the Theotokos’s protection of the Greek armed forces in their resistance of the Axis invasion). This commemorates the miraculous appearance of the Mother of God at the Blachernae Church in Constantinople in the mid-tenth century. It was in this church where the robe, veil and part of the belt of the Theotokos were preserved after being recovered from Palestine in the fifth century. On Sunday October 1, during an all night vigil, when the church was overflowing with the faithful, the Fool-for-Christ Saint Andrew, at four o'clock in the morning, beheld the Theotokos appearing above the people, holding her omophorion outstretched as a protective covering. She was clothed in gold-encrusted royal purple, and shone with an ineffable radiance, surrounded by apostles, saints, martyrs and virgins.

Our Beloved Holy Mother tearfully prayed for Christians for a long time, coming near the bishop's throne to continue her prayer. After, she took her veil and spread it over the people praying in the church, protecting them from enemies visible and invisible, resplendent with heavenly glory and gleaming like the rays of the sun. Saint Andrew gazed trembling at the miraculous vision and asked his disciple, named Epiphanius, standing beside him, "Do you see, brother, the Holy Theotokos, praying for all the world?" Epiphanius answered, "I do see, holy father, and I am in awe."

On this glorious Feast we implore the defense and assistance of the Queen of Heaven, "Remember us in your prayers, O Lady Virgin Mother of God, that we not perish by the increase of our sins. Protect us from every evil and from grievous woes, for in you do we hope, and venerating the Feast of your Protection, we magnify you."
