The Story Behind This Icon:

This icon is a replica of the original Holy Virgin Mary Gorgoepikoos, a miraculous wall-painting/icon found in the Docheiariou Monastery on Mount Athos, Greece dating to the 11^th century. Holy Virgin Mary Gorgoepikoos is known for responding quickly to prayers.

In 1646, a monk of the monastery lost his sight after disobeying for the second time the voice of the Icon (which he initially believed was from a human being) commanding him not to pass by the Icon with the smoke from his lighted torch.  Following the loss of his sight, the monk spent his days in front of the Icon praying to the Holy Virgin Mary for forgiveness. His prayers were granted when, for the third time he heard a voice from the Icon: “Today I give you your sight and from this time on, do not pass through here with lighted torches, I am the Guardian of this monastery and I respond quickly to those who call me.  From now on my name is “Gorgoepikoos” (She Who Is Quick to Hear)."  Since then, the Holy Virgin Mary Gorgoepikoos has responded to many prayers with miracles.

The icon is remembered by the church on October 1.

The Story Behind This Icon:

The icon of Christ the Bridegroom is one of the most special depictions of Jesus himself. He is illustrated in a state of total humility, with a crown of thorns and a somber look. The name “Bridegroom” itself highlights Christ’s love for the Church, his “Bride”. 

The icon of the Bridegroom is prominent in Holy Week, as it is processed on Palm Sunday Evening and left out until Holy Wednesday.

This is an iconographic posture of Jesus Christ the Lifegiver. Jesus Christ gives us his blessing with His right hand and holds the Gospel with His left hand, and is here to teach us about eternal life. The IC and XC letters on the left and right upper corner are the Greek abbreviations for the words “Jesus Christ”.

The Story Behind This Icon:

This icon portrays the monasteries, the miracles and the salient figures in the extraordinary history of Mount Athos. In the center of the icon, the Virgin Mary is depicted, holding her Holy Belt. The Athonite Saints Peter and Athanasios are shown at her feet. In the inner ring of the icon, the founders of the monasteries and some significant saints from each are depicted. In the outer ring, sixteen of the twenty monasteries in Mount Athos are shown, while the remaining four can be seen around the icon. In the two top corners of the icon, one can find the Saints George and Nicholas, who are considered the protector saints of Mount Athos. In numerous places around the icon, there are depictions of daily life typical to monastic communities. One can also see notable sites such as the cells of Saints Paisios, Karyes, and Sarai. The image is completed with the depiction of the Nine Invisible Hermits, as well as the calming image of pilgrims venerating Holy Relics. Finally, one can see the small illustration of the miracle of the icon of the Panagia Portaitissa.

The Story Behind This Icon:

The icon of the Panagia Eleoussa (also Virgin of Tenderness) is known for showing mercy. The icon depicts the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus Christ who is nestling against her cheek and wraps his arm around His Mother’s neck. The term “Eleoussa” translates from the Greek “to show mercy”.

The Story Behind This Icon:

This icon is a replica of the original icon, found above the gates of the Iviron Monastery in Mount Athos, Greece.

Perhaps one of the most treasured icons on Mount Athos, Greece and throughout the world, Panagia Portaitissa is connected to a rich history and a plethora of miracles. During the years of the Byzantine Iconoclasm (8^th & 9^th century), a widow and her son threw the Icon into the sea in an effort to save it from being burnt and destroyed by the soldiers of the Emperor Theophilus. Instead of sinking, the Icon stood upright and travelled through the sea. Deeply moved by this scene, the widow’s son dedicated himself to God and later settled in Mount Athos where he told the story to other monks.

About a century later, the monks of the Iviron Monastery in Mount Athos saw for several days a column of light extending from the sea to the heavens. The mystery was revealed by the Holy Mother of God Herself, who urged Gabriel, a monk of the monastery, to walk on the waters (as if it were land) and bring the Icon back to shore. The monks built a chapel and zealously worshipped the icon every day. Despite this, after its installation in the altar, the icon repeatedly disappeared from the chapel and was always found above the gate of the monastery. The Holy Virgin Mary appeared to monk Gabriel again, to tell him that this was the place she had chosen, so that she could protect the monks, and not be protected by them. The icon has since then taken the name “Portaitissa” (The Keeper of the Portal).

According to legend, a pirate once struck the icon with his sword and blood began to flow from the Virgin’s cheek. Shaken by this miracle, the soldier instantly repented and started a monastic life. Since then, all copies of the Icon have depicted Her with a scar and blood on Her cheek.

The Story Behind This Icon:

The Prophet Elias (Elijah) was part of the Old Testament, living in Galaad near the Jordan River. He belonged to a lineage of priests, and was a simple and humble man. His zeal and passion for God led him to be called a Zealot, keeping God at the center of his life. His prayer was so strong that it led to a three and a half year drought, as a way of showing the strength of God to his unfaithful people. He used his prayer to burn idols, slay 450 false priests and prophets, and multiply the goods of the faithful all in the name of God. The power of his prayer was legendary, just as widespread as his prophecies. He lived in a cave where a raven sent by God came to feed him daily. The miracles he performed in the name of God are too many to count, but all are written in the scripture. In his life, Elias gained one apostle, Elisseus, who was with him until the end, where after splitting the Jordan in half and reaching the other side, a fiery chariot from heaven stole him away. It is written that before the Second Coming of Christ, Elias will return on his fiery chariot to prophesize and show the power of God once again.

Prophet Elias' feast day is celebrated on July 20.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Anthony was born in Egypt in the mid 3rd century, to a very poor family, who left him at a young age. Upon learning about the ways of Christ, Anthony gave away all his belongings to the poor and left for the desert. He worked hard for God, living alone in the desert and working on perfecting his own spirit. After twenty years alone, he slowly began to gain followers, which eventually led to the founding of a desert colony. He came to the aid of many Christians around the world, providing his wisdom wherever necessary. After a while, he left the colony and lived once again by himself, journeying into the desert. He trained himself with fasting and prayer, living a life that is impossible for most to live. He was a friend of Saint Athanasius the Great, who said that Anthony came out of the desert blessed by the Holy Spirit and established in Christ’s grace. Because so many people came to see him and receive his blessing, Saint Anthony left civilization once again to travel with a tribe of Bedouins. Saint Anthony lived to be 105 years of age and passed away peacefully in Christ in 346 A.D.

The text on the scroll is in Ancient Greek and reads: "I saw the snares of the devil spread on all the earth".

Saint Anthony’s feast day is celebrated on January 17.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Arsenios was born in 1840 in Pharassa of Cappadocia, in a small Christian village. He experienced the mysteries of Christ firsthand as a young boy, being saved from drowning by Saint George himself. Arsenios decided from that age that he would become a monk when he came of age. He was sent away to be educated in a more central city, but when he visited home, he always taught the children of the village everything he had learned. At twenty six years old, Saint Arsenios became a monk at the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Cappadocia. After a short time at the monastery, he was ordained a Deacon and sent to his home village as a teacher. He taught the children how to read and write in Greek in secret, as Greece was under Turkish rule. He became a priest at thirty years of age. He began to perform miracles and he was known very well around the land. His healing abilities were so profound that even Turks themselves would come to be healed. He protected his village as he could, but eventually the exchange of populations came and they were removed from their village. Saint Arsenios prophesied his death, stating that he would die 40 days after arriving in Greece.

Saint Arsenios’ feast day is celebrated on November 10.
