The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Nektarios was born in the mid-19th century in Selymbria, Thrace (Northern Greece) and was widely recognized by the faithful for his preaching and leadership capabilities. He graduated from the University of Athens in 1885, and thereafter was ordained a Priest and moved to Cairo, Egypt, where he served in the Church of Saint Nicholas. He was consecrated as the Bishop of Pentapolis (the Metropolis of Egypt at the time). Following his unjust removal as Bishop of Cairo, he became director of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School in Athens, followed by the Metropolitan of the island of Aegina, where he also established the Holy Trinity Monastery.

Saint Nektarios spent the rest of his life on Aegina, all the while publishing, preaching and spreading the One True Faith. The 2021 film "Man of God" depicted the life of Saint Nektarios, and his humility, patience, obedience and faith as he endured the trials and tribulations of this life, including unjust accusations motivated by earthly politics and desires. During his life, Saint Nektarios was viewed widely by the faithful as a saintly man, with awe at his patience and humility as much as at his philosophical and educational abilities.

Saint Nektarios' feast day is celebrated on November 9.
