The Story Behind this Icon:

Saint Alexandra was an Empress of Rome and wife to the great persecutor of Christians, Diocletian. She was so impressed by the courage and martyrdom of Saint George that she became a Christian and fell under the same persecution.

In her Holy Icon, Saint Alexandra is depicted in her royal robes with a crown, indicating her worldly status but also her perfection in her martyrdom. When a Saint holds a cross in their hand, as Saint Alexandra does here, it indicates they were martyred. Saint Alexandra is also shown holding a building, indicating her role in the foundation of Christianity in the Roman Empire: only a few short decades after the reign of Diocletian, Christianity became the official religion of the Empire!
