Saint Paraskevi was born to a pious Christian family near Rome during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. Saint Paraskevi's parents prayed fervently to God for a child and, when she was born on a Friday, they named her "Paraskevi" (which means "Friday" in Greek and which literally translates to "preparation") in gratitude to the Lord for His blessings.

Saint Paraskevi was highly educated, especially in philosophy. She was sought after by many families as a wife for their sons, but rejected all proposals in favor of a life dedicated to Christ. At the age of 20, her parents passed away, and Saint Paraskevi sold her inheritance and dedicated the proceeds to charity, preaching to women about the Christian faith. For years, Saint Paraskevi spoke powerfully directly to the souls of many Romans, leading them to faith in Christ.

Years later, Jews and pagans in Rome filed complaints about her and Emperor Antoninus Pius called Saint Paraskevi before him to address the complaints. At first with flattery, and then later with torture, the worldly emperor failed to move Saint Paraskevi. In the tortures, the emperor was temporarily blinded and Saint Paraskevi healed him, after which he ceased persecutions against Christians. For this reason Saint Paraskevi is invoked for the healing of eye ailments.

After the death of Antoninus Pius, Saint Paraskevi was captured again and subjected to further torments. She suffered patiently, contesting powerfully for Christ, destroying pagan idols with the sign of the Cross and ultimately achieving thew crown of martyrdom by beheading.
