The Story Behind This Icon:

The Holy and Right-Believing Saint Vladimir was the Grand Prince of Kiev when Orthodox Christianity was introduced into present-day Russia and Ukraine. He is the grandson of Saint Olga (also Saint Olga), who converted to Christianity, and Saint Vladimir is credited with the conversion of the Slavic lands to the one true Orthodox faith.

Saint Vladimir was a devout pagan in his early life. He was a great conqueror who had many wives and erected pagan statues across his kingdom. Upon discovering other faiths existing beyond his own paganism, Saint Vladimir sought to determine which was the true faith. He sent envoys out into the world to learn more. His envoys met with Muslims, Jews and Catholics and were unimpressed by all. But when Prince Vladimir's envoys arrived in Constantinople, everything changed - they attended the Divine Liturgy in the Hagia Sophia, reacting that "we no longer knew whether we were in heaven or on earth."

Upon hearing the results of his envoys, Saint Vladimir had himself and his whole nation baptized into the Orthodox Church. His life changed after his baptism. Saint Vladimir ordered the destruction of all pagan statues that stood in Kievan Rus' and replaced them with churches. He further rejected pagan cultural norms, attempting to live in peace as much as possible with his neighbors and only had one wife for the rest of his days.

For these reasons, Saint Vladimir is lauded as "Equal to the Apostles", a title reserved for great defenders and spreaders of the Faith such as Constantine the Great.

Saint Vladimir's feast day is celebrated on July 15.

Icons of smaller dimensions are naturally sustainable over time, and experience less structural stress. As such, you will find that the backside of smaller Holy Icons is flat and proportional to their shape.
