Saint Anne was the mother of the Virgin Mary. She was married to Joachim, and for years, the couple was not able to have children. Through their faith and prayers, Anne finally gave birth to the Virgin Mary at a very old age. Anne and Joachim devoted their child to serve God in a temple in Jerusalem, as a gift to Him for fulfilling their wish to conceive. Saint Anne is invoked for help in conceiving children and for difficulties in childbirth. Nowadays, a portion of Saint Anne's relics can be found at the Skete of Saint Anna on Mount Athos, Greece.

Saint Anne is celebrated three times throughout the year: On her Conception (December 9), on her Dormition (July 25) and again on September 9 along with her husband Joachim.

Fourth Tone

Against all hope, the bonds of barrenness are loosed today. For, God has hearkened unto Joachim and Anna clearly promising that they would bear a godly maiden. He who commanded the angel to cry out to her, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you," will be born of her, the infinite One Himself, becoming man.
