The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint John the Theologian, the beloved Apostle of Christ, one of the original Twelve Disciples, writer of the Gospel bearing his name, three letters (John I, II and III) and the Book of Revelation. Saint John was the youngest of the twelve Apostles and especially close to the Lord, which is often portrayed in icons of the Mystical Supper where Saint John leans on Christ. Saint John was also charged by Jesus Christ to take the Theotokos into his care as his own mother after Christ's crucufixion: He said to John, while hanging on the cross, "Behold your mother."

Saint John was exiled to the island of Patmos by Emperor Domitian in the 90s AD, which is where he received and wrote the Book of Revelation. Saint John's Gospel differs materially in tone and subject matter from the other three Gospels; its theology and discussion of the nature of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is eye-opening and spiritually moving.

Saint John the Theologian is most often depicted in icons as elderly with a long white beard, typically holding the Gospel. The main exception to this is icons where the Apostles are depicted with Christ - as the youngest Apostle, in those icons Saint John is depicted as a young man. In our icon of him, the Gospel held in his arms contains the following well-known and universally beloved verse from the Gospel of John: "For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son."

Saint John was present for at least two miracles, the Transfiguration and the raising of the daughter of Jairus. He is the patron saint of those suffering from heart conditions.

Saint John the Theologian's primary feast day is celebrated on May 8 and his repose is commemorated on September 26.
