The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Sabbas was born in a small Cappadocian village in 439 A.D. He is one of the most highly regarded patriarchs among the monks of Palestine and is considered one of the founders of Eastern Orthodox monasticism. He lived in desert caves most of his life and lived to the venerable age of 94 years.

Saint Sabbas was born to pious Christian parents John and Sophia. He entered the arena of the monastic life from childhood, tonsured a monk at 17 years old. After 10 years at the Monastery of Saint Flavian, he left to learn under the master spiritual father of monastics, Euthymius the Great. During this time, the two monks would leave for the desert on January 14 of the year and remain there in asceticism until Palm Sunday. Saint Euthymius called Sabbas a Child-Elder and encouraged him to grow in monastic virtues.

Saint Sabbas eventually became the spiritual Father of many monks and an instructor for the monasteries in Palestine. He was later appointed leader (archimandrite) of the desert-dwellers of Palestine by the Patriarch of Jerusalem. In his old age Saint Sabbas went to Constantinople, to the Emperors Anastasius and Saint Justinian the Great, on behalf of the Orthodox Faith and to support the dogmas of the Council of Chalcedon. Saint Sabbas also composed the "Jerusalem Typikon", followed by all of the Palestinian monasteries. Having lived ninety-four years, he reposed in the year 532 AD.

The monastery he lived in still exists to this day, Holy Lavra of Saint Sabbas, which was founded in 483 by Saint Sabbas himself.

Saint Sabbas' feast day is celebrated on December 5.
