The Story Behind This Icon

The Theotokos Platytera is a depiction of the Mother of God that is seen in Orthodox Churches as commonly as one sees Christ Pantocrator. It is typically placed prominently above the Holy Altar. "Platytera" is a Greek term that used in this context means "Broader than the Heavens" or "More Spacious than the Heavens", a description of the mystery of the Theotokos's conception and bearing of Jesus Christ, containing in her womb the uncontainable Creator of the Universe. In the icon the Theotokos holds her hands aloft in a gesture of prayer, with Christ contained in her womb as a child, and the angels bearing them both aloft.

This icon is made of solid, natural limewood (Tilia) that has been prepared by hand using traditional methods and organic materials. The background consists of 22 Karat gold leaves that were meticulously applied by hand, piece by piece. Subtle connecting lines and brush strokes may be visible on the gold leaves and are a testament to the artisan's hand, making each piece entirely unique.
